we are bringing you another broadcast tonight from newtown, connecticut. a town where many students returned to school today. schools reopened with the exception, of course, of sandy hook elementary. the school that is now a crime scene. the students will go back to school after the holidays in a different building eight mile away with 20 bright young faces missing from the halls and the classrooms. everything is different now. the children in this town are facing a new reality. doing things they never should have to do at this young age, like writing goodbye letters to their friends. 6-year-old jack pinto was buried yesterday. the funeral, a note from his friend john reads, jack, you're my best friend. we had fun together. i will miss you. i will talk to you in my prayers. i love you, jack. love john. there were two more funerals today for two more 6-year-olds. jess they were laid to rest today. we will remember them tonight and honor them tonight. our hearts and our thoughts are with their families and their friends and we wish peace and strength to all

that may be thinking about connecticut. this child care facility is less than a mile from the pentagon. up the hill here and a lot of people who work in the pentagon drop kids off before they come down the hill to work. this all began in september when workers were arrest and they notified the parents they had a problem and didn't tell anybody else. they worked at it and discovered there were a number of employees with background check problems. people with things like drug convictions and abuse and sex abuse of a minor. assault charges and they came up with all of this and they wound up having to dismiss last friday night, 30 workers and then it was only then that the secretary of the army last friday night was informed about the scope of all that. >> the pentagon is not just upset about the daycare, but the lack of communication. military leaders were not aware of the investigation until recently. this is so significant. you don't know where to begin. the background checks of the people and it is concerning to the parent

we are here in newtown, connecticut. heading towards the bottom of the hour. i'm kate bolduan and john berman will be back to join me in a couple of minutes. let's catch you up on what we know this sunday. president obama will head to newtown, connecticut, where he will meet with the families of the victims. the president will also speak at a vigil, an interfaith vigil tonight. many people looking forward to hearing his words. we also know 12 of the victims were boys and 8 were girls. the medical examiner released the names of all of the victims yesterday. all of the children were either 6 or 7 years old. while 6 of them have the victi adults, all were women working at the school. united way set up a fund to collect donations for victims' families and the community as a whole. it's called the sandy hook school support fund. all donations will go directly to those affected. many ways to impact your world today. >>> we still don't know much, though, about the shooter, adam lanza. so many questions and very few answers. what type of person he was. i want to bring

it's a tight-knit community in this southwestern connecticut town. and even though you can't really get a sense of it now, it is one of the more picturesque places i'm standing in. rolling green hills and quite an affluent neighborhood, two and three-story homes. the thinking is people moved to this area because of the school systems. so it strikes a particular chord that this occurred within an elementary school. but then you also have that other side, the talk of this woman, nancy lanza, who collected guns, some high-powered weapons as in that bushmaster that was used in the elementary school shooting. it's not clear whether she attended some of the shooting ranges in the area although we know there are at least three shooting ranges within a 20-mile range of this area. one of the workers that i spoke to at a local business here said that she often showed her rifle -- showed a rifle that she had recently purchase and even brought her children target shooting. not clear if that occurred at those ranges or just in and around the area. atf and federal
